Our Cats after Release:
Oak Leaf: It was raining so did not go to the
barn. BUT – Blackie and Jason are
getting along fine and the rat problem is being controlled by “the boys”.
Midlothian: Peg, Tom, and Teddy Jack are hanging out and
return to their carrier/hidey boxes each evening.
Prosper: Diane,
Dana, and Dena are still contained in a room with a window. They are loose in the room and the barn owner
has put in a screen door that is opened for air and light each day. They are doing well! These are 3 orange females that are
sisters.
Melissa: Peach, Ginger Snap, and Crookshank are still contained in the barn. All are doing well. The barn owner decided to keep them loose but contained for several weeks to make sure they stayed around. All are eating, drinking and pooping...no sign of any rodents!
Phone Calls/Emails You Don’t Want to Get:
·
Wednesday, about noon, got a
panic-stricken email from a former barn placement about some cats coming from
Weatherford Animal Services to a barn north and west of Weatherford. WELL – the group was picking them up at the
vet clinic after spay/neuter and going to just “release” them at the barn – no
relocation period, no caging, etc. I got the address, packed the truck, and headed for Weatherford via the
northern route – through Boyd, south to Springtown, west to Agnes and
Poolville, then to the barn location.
GLAD I WAS THERE! The 2 females
were still very groggy from the surgery and should never have been
“released”. Thanks to Jenni who called
me and met me at the barn with the cats. It was a long drive but for a good cause. Those three cats should do well there! Whew!
Bluebonnets Are Back:
Check out these from
Ennis. They are the bluebonnet capital
of the world. They have the Bluebonnet Trail (a driving trail) around Ennis
this time of year. The old-growth bluebonnets
are almost a purple.
UPDATE: Animals
in West, TX, following the Fertilizer Storage Explosion:
·
The SPCA from
Dallas went down on Friday to clear out the West Municipal Shelter. I called and left a message that we can help
if any cats are feral/semi-feral.
·
Texas A&M had
a triage team down there on Thursday. They treated one horse plus several dogs and cats. They left on Friday.
·
The Central Texas
Humane Society is helping with support, food, and whatever is needed
there. They are formerly the Waco Humane
Society. We have a contact there with
the Barn Cat Buddies program…so…I am sure we will get a call for help if it is
needed.
·
GOOD STORY: A guy was told to evacuate his home. He has several indoor and outdoor cats. He left lots of food and water for the indoor
cats and locked up the house. He grabbed
the outdoor cats and took them with him! GOOD JOB! I think the mess with
Katrina has opened our eyes about treatment of animals in disaster
situations.
·
I will be driving
through West on Tuesday. I will give an
update in the Blog next week if I see anything.
Thanks for following the Barn Cats blog. See you next week! Peg
