October Closeout
We placed 50 in 9 North Texas counties:
            Collin              Denton            Fannin             Rockwall         Wichita
            Dallas              Ellis                 Grayson           Tarrant

Our Cats after Release:
1.        McClendon-Chisholm:  Two torti girls (Sophia, Sally) were placed in this barn.  YES – they are staying in their home barn but also “visit” the barn next door.  Their Great Pyrenees is keeping them in line.
2.        Nevada:  Two black females (Sue, Sally) were placed in this garage in a new subdivision.  We saw both of them but got a picture of one.  They have a window to come and go but are staying close – GOOD!

3.          McKinney:  Mary, Martha, Mickey, Marty were placed in a feed room with a window in this barn in McKinney.  They are still contained but the barn owner has put in their own beds, etc. so I picked up our beds, carriers, feeder, and other items.  I got pictures of Marty, Mikey, and Mary:

Bad Calls/EMAILS:  Feeders Overwhelmed
I am receiving several calls a week from colony feeders who are having their cats’ environment destroyed to make room for new construction.  Well this cannot be a surprise or even should be a surprise in the Dallas area.  Cats are very resourceful – they will find another location for food/shelter.  Not all cats should be relocated.  Are they in danger?  Are people killing them?   That should be the really gating factor.

BMG:  Shelter Giving Out Lists to Call
I am tired of shelters who cannot take a cat or group of cats then give out a list of other groups and say “Call them.”  Well – that is not the way to find an adoption group.  There are 300 to 400 adoption groups in the DFW area but most have an answering machine in a black hole that is rarely checked and few return phone messages.  You find an adoption group by going to PetsMart and/or Petco when the groups are there…not by calling them!   You need to remember that those shelters have “employees” – these folks are not rescuers.  They do not know how to play the game.  Calling does little to no good and just frustrates folks.  Send them to PetsMart and Petco when the groups are there.  That is how you find them!

OMG:  Cat with Reservation From Over a Month Ago
I received a call that lady that was coming to Lewisville but ended up in Van Alstyne.  She brought in Ethel the first week in October and JUST NOW caught Lucy.  I did not even remember this it had been so long.  Ethel went to an adoption group and hopefully Lucy will be friendly enough as well…???  She got indignant when I said I did not have an open cage.   “Well you said anytime” – YES but that was the next week – not 4 weeks later with no contact in between.  She had her contained on a Friday but I will not have an open cage until Sunday.  She continued to talk and talk and talk but finally I just had to cut her off and said once again “I will have a cage open on Sunday…not before!”  Do you think talking will change the cage situation?  GEEZ!

Thanks for following the Barn Cat Blog.  See you next week!       Peg
