Blog 07/25/16 to 07/31/16

NEED YOUR SUPPORT ESPECIALLY IF YOU LIVE IN LEWISVILLE, TX – Code Enforcement in Lewisville announced last Friday (just before city offices closed at noon) that Animal Services would no longer be allowed to test or spay/neuter any cats considered feral.  We have taken 30 cats from them this year after they had been tested negative for feline leukemia, spayed/neutered, and given rabies and distemper shots.  Those 30 cats received a second chance for a life but many, many others were KILLED just because they were labeled feral.  I have plans to talk to both Code Enforcement and the City Manager tomorrow 8/1/16.  If this decision is not rescinded, I will need as many people as possible to show support for Barn Cats at the City Council Meeting that will be held that evening at the City Hall, 151 W. Church Street, Lewisville, TX 75057 at 7 pm.  Please come to show your support – sign a card that you support Barn Cats – be ready to stand when I ask for that show.  If the decision is rescinded, a post will be done to the BLOG and to Facebook.  THANKS!  Our Forgotten Cats Need You!

7          Garage in Collinsville (Tigger, Shiloh, Tabby, Cleo, Speedy, Spider, Duchess)
3          Backyard Shed in Prosper (Wyatt, Watson, Marsha)
1          Covered Back Porch in Sanger (Birta)
2          Barn in Ponder (Elmer, Shelby)

Our Cats after Release:
1.     Granbury:  Smokey, Blue, Jet, Lucy, Harley, and Carrot went to this barn in Granbury.  They are still seeing 4 out of 5 which is expected.  2 are going also to a neighbor’s barn as well.  GOOD JOB!
2.     Plano:  Sophie and Sally were placed in the garage workshop.  Both are doing well.  The property backs up to a creek so rodents will be a continuing problem.  Hopefully that problem has been resolved by our cats.

June Closeout:  We placed 33 in 5 North Texas Counties.

 Bad Calls/Emails:  Birdie Mae
We received Birdie Mae from an elderly lady in the Bonham area along with 3 others.  “Junior” has gone home with one of our volunteers, “Shirley” is still here, and a younger one went to an adoption group.  Birdie Mae is “older that dirt” 18 years at least but seems in good health.  She is skinny but purrs a lot when she is in my lap.  BUT – last weekend she started peeing everywhere…on rugs, chairs, food bowls, etc.  I took her to the vet and they did blood work.  A cat’s red blood cell count should be 137 – Birdie Mae’s was 12!  Vet could not believe she seems so good but could not prove it by the blood work.  We think the decline has been gradual and her body has just adjusted.  Kidney and liver levels are low as well.  Poos Birdie Mae!  Her end may be soon.  She is so cute and loveable!

BMG:   4 then 3 More!
In May, I received a “warning” call from the SPCA.  They had given my number to a guy with cats BREEDING in his condo.  Well – it was May 29th when I received the first text.  He won’t call but will sent gigantic text messages…passive regressive!  The SPCA took his kittens but not the adults – 4 young adults about 1 yr – none spayed/neutered.  I told him to bring them to our vet in Coppell any week Tuesday – Thursday.  It took him 8 weeks to get the last one in last Tuesday.  Then he tells me there are 3 more outside….I should have known!   He got 2 in on Thursday but no sign of the last one AND he is being evicted on Tuesday 8/1/16.  Geez!

OMG:  Shot Up Mailbox and Rainbow
We went to Collinsville on Tuesday.  When I call to just check in, the property owner said someone had shot the numbers off her mailbox…WHAT!  Here is the evidence along with a pretty rainbow from Monday on I35 near Sanger.

Relocations and In Take:   We placed 18 this week.  We are only putting cats in areas with good insulation and ventilation and all have a fan.  “Julie” even got an air-conditioned area!

3          Workshop in Argyle (Heckle, Jeckle, Jenny)
            1          Workshop in Haslet (Motley)
            1          Adoption Group (Simba)
2          4 car garage in Heath (George, Brittany)

2          Moved cats from Argyle to Bartonville
3          Workshop in Rockwall (Merrill, Dude, Clark)
2          Barn in Copper Canyon (Happy, Mama Kitty)
1          Garage/office in Copper Canyon (Julie)

Our Cats after Release:
1.     Whitesboro:  Tom, Andy, and Ian went to this workshop in Whitesboro.  I did not get to see “the boys” but the barn owner says they are around and doing their job.  GREAT!
2.     Eastland:  Charlotte and Duchess are being illusive – up the stairs to the attic – but Sugar is visible and lets them pet her.  They have seen the two but only occasionally.
HOWEVER, they have had several HEADLESS RATS – GREAT JOB, LADIES!

Bad Calls/Emails:  16 Cats and Counting
In a Dallas suburb, a mom has 8 adults and 8 kittens.  I told her we do not kittens because the hawks carry them off in the daytime and the owls at night.  She said there used to be more and that is probably what happened to them…BUMMER!  Anyway, told her to TNR to stop the breeding and I can take the adults in the fall.  It is getting pretty hot and I need to take cats from kill shelters to save their lives.  If you don’t get the first cat(s) sterilized, this is what happens.

BMG:  Cats Out and Brought Back
I took 4 cats to a location in between Midlothian and Waxahachie.  She had said “There is a shed/garage, an empty chicken coop, and a workshop with an air-conditioned apartment.”  Well, the shed/garage does not have electricity for a fan, the chicken coop is falling apart with lots of dried chicken poop piled up and lots of spiders, and the workshop with the apartment is occupied and closed up (hot-hot-hot) all the time to deter anyone from stealing their equipment.  Bottom Line:  There was no place for the cats to have a “home”.  SO – back to Lewisville with them.  The cats are demanding Frequent Flyer Miles.  We always try to not set them up to fail.

OMG:  RATS EVERYWHERE
My neighbor found 2 rat bodies decomposing in her yard!  I am getting so many requests for cats that I cannot keep up.  Calls about rats are up 67% in the city of Chicago.  They have begun releasing sterilized feral cats to those areas.  WOW!

OMG (Oh My God):  Bonham Update (Willow and Mel)

Relocations and In Take:   Got home on Friday and just picking up equipment and making plans to place cats next week.

Our Cats after Release:
1.     Aubrey:  Betty, Keiko, and Roberta were placed under this carport.  Keiko and Roberta are spending most of their time in the neighbor’s barn but are coming home to eat.  Betty has made a “home for herself” in the back of the ATV.

2.     Fairview:  Minnie, Puffs, and Barb were placed in this workshop/barn area.  They are all doing great.  AND – one of them got out of the cage before they were official released but had taken up in a cabinet.  WHATEVER WORKS!
3.     Bartonville:  Byron, Nelson, and Blake are living at a goat dairy farm.  Blake is being illusive but he has been spotted on the property.  Byron and Nelson are around and seen each day.
4.     Northlake:  Buddy and Stripe were placed on a back patio.  They are hiding in the front bushes because of the heat but both come back to eat.  All is good in Northlake!
5.     Seagoville:  Ribbit was placed in this barn…BUT the owners of the property “fell in love” with him and he is now permanently inside.  GOOD GOING RIBBIT!
6.     Lewisville:  Junior went home with one of our volunteers.  He will be an inside pet.

Bad Calls/Emails:  Full Phone Message Box
Please, people:  Keep your messages cleared out.  Also, sometimes I get “Message box not set up yet”.   OK – People with this situation should not be leaving ANYBODY ELSE any messages.

BMG:  No Entry This Week

OMG:  Bonham Update
We put 3 cats in a workshop in Bonham several months ago.  I just received updated pictures from the property owner.  The single cat is Willow and the two are Celia (their black inside cat who now has an outside boyfriend) and Mel the orange/white tabby.  We put a third cat out with them which they also see often.  WONDERFUL NEWS!
