Relocations and In Take:   Placed 14 this week with intake at 17:
3          Greenville Rescue
3          Workshop in Annetta
1          Greenhouse in Oak Leaf (Sheba)
4          Garage/Backyard in Melissa (Pepper, Baxter, Bruce, Ava)
3          Barn in Sanger (Beth, Liz, Morgan)

The workshop in Annetta turns out is the mom of someone we put cats with about 5 years ago. He took 5 and 3 are still around.

Bad News:  Geri was a torti that came from the “Miss Texas” hoarder earlier this year. She was always small and I worried about her. We did some blood work and nothing appeared out of the ordinary…so…I relo’ed her to Oak Leaf. I alerted the property owner that she might be “coming down with a cold” or something. He called on Tuesday (afternoon of the bad storm) that she “did not look good”. I picked her up on Wednesday. It was raining, hailing, etc. too much on Tuesday afternoon for me to get through Dallas. Dr. Jim at All Care knocked her out and felt something “weird” in her belly. He did an x-ray then withdrew some fluid from her abdomen. BAD NEWS:  Fluid showed cancer. Geri was euthanized about 1:30 that afternoon, 5/22/13. RIP Miss Geri! She is in a better place with much less pain.

Our Cats after Release:
·         Azle – Nordie, Charity, and Noel have all been seen around the property but are mostly hiding. As long as the rodents disappear, all will be good at the church in Azle.
·         Got many places to pick up next week (Burleson, Waxahachie, Dallas, Flower Mound, Rhome)…hope to see many of our guys next week.

Phone Calls/Emails You Don’t Want to Get:
·         Greenville UPDATE:  She got 3 out of 4 to the clinic. When the 4th gets spayed, then we can talk about kitten pickup.
·         Remember the call from south and east of Temple/Belton – guy with LOTS of cats and no way to get them sterilized.  WELL – he came through this week. There is a low cost mobile vet or satellite location for a group out of Austin. AND – he has an appointment. AND -- they will take our credit card over the phone. I DON’T BELIEVE IT!

BMG:
·         Hysterical Phone Calls:  You know, folks, you need to at least be coherent when you call someone late at night. Try to calm down and make sense! AND…I cannot help you anytime with a neighborhood problem with kittens – we never take kittens. Kittens can be carried off by a hawk in the daytime or an owl at night. They become DINNER!

Thanks for following the Barn Cats blog.  See you next week!           Peg

Relocations and In Take:   Placed 16 this week with intake at 8:
2          Bonham Rescue
1          To Siamese Rescue (Samantha)
3          Greenhouse in Oak Leaf (Geri, Jamie, Taylor)
2          Barn in Denton (Aria, Johnny)
1          Garage in Alvarado (Reece)
2          Houston (Willie, Whiskers) (see below)
2          Backyard in Sachse (Marina, Martin)
3          Barn in Sanger (Jerry, Lisa, Anna)

Today is Sunday and for the first time in many months, I have empty cages in the cat rooms. YES – those cages are spoken for – but at least I am ahead of the game and not setting up temporary cages in my family room.

Our Cats after Release:
·         Argyle – Lucy, Ricky, Ethel and Fred are doing well in Argyle. They roam around the yard and show up in the evening to eat. Best of all – they have not seen any snakes since the cats were released.
·         Sanger – Grady and Armand have “moved on”.  They are not returning to eat at the barn site but there are many other barns in the area.
·         Sachse – Danny and Dora have also not been seen in the neighborhood but there are lots of places for them to hide…many backyards and church property right behind the house.
·         Ennis – They got Diner inside the garage BEFORE the bad weather hit on Wednesday night.  There was a reported tornado in Ennis – took the roof off a motel on I-45. These folks live on a frontage road of I-45…so I was worried!
·         Bonita (Krum) – Mona and Cinco are hanging out in the rafters of the old barn. There is a good place for them. I picked up the equipment from the vet clinic in Krum where the barn owner works.

Willie and Whiskers:  I took in two cats from Mansfield. One, Willie, only has partial sight.  Whiskers, the sister, is his buddy. An organization in Houston, Purr Paws Rescue, takes in “special needs cats”. I am very thankful to find these folks because the other option was Blind Cat Rescue in North Carolina. Also, the Houston group has a person that does transport….so….I only had to drive half way. I did that on Saturday – so Willie and Whiskers are now with a group that can better meet their needs. THANKS!

Memorial for a Turtle:  When it rains in Texas, the turtle show up on the roadways. I saw one in the middle of the center lane of I-45 in Corsicana. I took the next exit and went around, but I was too late – someone had hit him before I got back. I have moved numerous turtle out of roads on Texas highways but this was the first I had ever seen on an interstate. BUMMER!

Phone Calls/Emails You Don’t Want to Get:
·         Greenville:  Tomorrow is the day they are suppose to get the 4 females in to be spay at Cause for Paws, the spay/neuter clinic in Greenville. We shall see…
NO SPAY – NO KITTEN PICK UP in Greenville!
BMG:
·         Well, there is a SPAY DAY scheduled in Dallas on the day of our fundraiser. So far, it has taken out 2 couples and a single who normally attend. GEEZ!

Thanks for following the Barn Cats blog.  See you next week!           Peg

Note from Jamie - it was my fault the posting was late - my apologies!!

Relocations and In Take:   Placed 9 this week with intake at 11:
            3          Bonham Rescue
3          Church in Azle (Charity, Noel, Nordie)
1          Garage in Ennis (Diner)
2          Barn in Pilot Point (Kitty Kitty and Kitty, Too!)

Diner went to live with a minister in Ennis. Charity, Noel, and Nordie went to a church. It was a religious week, I guess!

April Closeout:  We placed 73 cats in 11 counties (I am POOPED!):
            Collin               Cooke              Dallas              Denton
            Ellis                  Fannin             Grayson           Montague
            Parker              Tarrant            Williamson

Our Cats after Release:

  •  Rockwall:  Barn Cat (Barbee) is doing well in Rockwall. I took her a flea treatment when I picked up equipment. She taught the dog who is boss!
  •  Prosper:  Jenny is a “killing machine”. The family is very happy and Jenny seems happy, too!

Phone Calls/Emails You Don’t Want to Get:
  • Around Corsicana:  A retired guy takes in strays. There is no spay/neuter clinic in his area and (you guessed it) he now has many, many cats! He has many kittens -- the SPCA in Dallas said they could help if he would bring them in. I did not say I could take cats but offered to pay for spay/neuter if he can find a low-cost option in Temple, Belton, etc. That would at least stop the breeding. Well – no update and it has been almost a week…???
  • Greenville:  Last year I took some kittens from a family in Greenville. They had 2 females…one of which they released to Barn Cats but then asked for it back. I did return that cat after the spay was done. I set up a spay for that second female with Cause for Paws “in” Greenville. I never received a call from Cause for Paws to pay for that spay….and….now there are additional kittens. ALSO – she is now calling for me to pick up those kittens – I have not called her back. It will take a lot for me to be nice. All she has to do is TAKE THE CAT FOR THE APPOINTMENT IN THE SAME TOWN!

BMG:
·         See above:  Here we go again. Folks say “I cannot afford to get them spayed/neutered” – but REALLY they want someone to rush over there, trap the cats, take it for sterilization, pay for it – and then deliver it back home. Well – it does not work that way. If truly they cannot afford it – I understand – AND Barn Cats will pay for it. BUT – you have to do the transport. I am over 1 ½ hours away but you cannot drive cross the same town to take that cat!

Thanks for following the Barn Cats blog.  See you next week!           Peg
