Relocations and In Take:   We had 11 placements this week.
3          Barn/workshop in Bonham (Sky, Mel, Willow)
2          Barn in Fort Worth (Longfellow, Short Stuff)
4          Barn/garage in Greenville (Kelly, Annie, Brandy, Tabitha)
2          Pool house in Copper Canyon (Autumn, Sandy)

Our Cats after Release:
1.     Dallas:  Emmy and Ringo were placed in this backyard down in Dallas.  There are chickens on the property – that means there will be rodents.  The rodents are gone but the cats have NOT been spotted.  I think the cats are still around just being stealth.
2.     Rockwall:  Spitfire and Angel were placed in this backyard area to control rabbits.  The owners want a garden and the bunnies are eating everything!  Since their release, none of their produce has been eaten.  Spitfire and Angel are doing their jobs.
3.     Allen:  Meredith was placed here to be a friend for Boomer.  Meredith sits in the rafters and points out mice for Boomer who is down on the barn floor.  They are a great team!

Bad Calls/EMAILS:  No Experience and No Connections
Evidence of a new feral cat group has surfaced in our area.  They have a collection jar at a local gas station and one of our volunteers saw it.  I went over, got a phone number, and called the person listed as the contact.  Well, they have never worked with a volunteer group that does either adoptions or trapping, had no idea about such groups, did not know about the spay/neuter clinic in Denton, on and on and on.  Why reinvent the wheel?  There are 300 – 400 adoption groups in the DFW area and several others that just do TNR (Trap/Neuter/Return).  The “founder” wants to open a no-kill shelter (never a bad idea) but with no experience you are getting into a potential money pit for yourself.  Do your some due diligence and get some experience BEFORE you commit to starting a 501C3 organization or shelter…you think?

BMG:  Needed:  More than a Good Heart
Just like the above story, this person wants to “just help the cats”.  She agreed to start a program to spay/neuter cats that are TNR’ed at a city between Dallas and Fort Worth.  She has agreed to a lot of stuff (like the organization will PAY for all the vet work) but then the city will “kill them” if they are picked up twice in the same location.  The answer is of course a Barn Cat Program.  WHAT?  Take on something else!  I hopefully stopped that in its tracks.  If the city wants you to do TNR, the CITY should be paying for the vet work just like they do BEFORE a cat is released to Barn Cats, Inc.  If these folks want to help cats, work with an established program that already has negotiated vet prices and volunteers already identified.  A “good heart” and no business experience will get you into the POOR HOUSE very quickly in this business.

OMG:  Autumn and Sandy – Pool House Relo
Autumn and Sandy are both friendly cats.  SO – I just decided to let them loose in the pool house for the 1 week relo period.  The mom of the family went out there to put in additional beds/blankets/etc, and AUTUMS RAN OUT!  She was totally docile here at the house and this behavior was a giant surprise.  We returned to the property to look for her, but to no avail.  We put Sandy in a cage so the pool house door could be left open, left a second feeder/waterer, and advised the owners to leave the door open in the daytime but close it at night.  Got a call Sunday morning and they found her in a shed on the property – YES!  She is still loose but we know she is safe.  They moved the feeder/waterer to the shed and also her hidey box/carrier.

Auction Items:  Showing you dog-themed items this week:  Two door mats, a shower caddy, a ceramic dog yard art, and three art pieces.
